Sunday morning walk

It is early Sunday morning so hardly hardly any traffic; all roadside shops and kitchens remain closed. A perfect moment for a walk around the block. First we need to pass through our gate,

and past the rubbish bins, watch out for the potholes,

..and here we take a left. You pass this plot -which is not for sale. No stray cats nor dogs here; we did see the occasional goat but past Christmas they seem to have disappeared as well.

Further down the lane the construction workers put their laundry out to dry on the barbed wire.

There is a lot of activity in construction but there are also many other unfinished projects all around.

Trees that serve for advertisement next to a dump for ceramics...

Huge billboards call to prayers at all sorts of religious services, some of them last until the early hours of the morning.

This lady has her smoked fish ready in case the churchgoers leave the ceremony

The sitting area of this eatery is neatly protected from the street through a white curtain: the food won't get dusty.

Coconut seller at the crossroads near the rail road track.

A small grocery is open on Sunday morning.

Some people built their houses between the shops and the rail road track.
Even though the trains are still running here, people use the tracks as a path.

Because of the early hour, many of the shops and bars are still closed. Normally it is very busy here.

In this old container we have to "buy" our electricity. We pre-pay an amount for which they will then credit your meter. Sometimes they are 'sold out' and we have to "squirrel" our power needs some place else. Sometimes they don't have any power themselves at all, in that case everything stops. The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) is nicknamed: Electricity Comes and Goes.

Ooit kon je hier sleutels laten bijmaken...
Once you could have your keys cut here..

These boys collect scrap metal but are now enjoying a good rest..

  1. What an exotic place Ghana is! And it seems quite poor too. Is it quite safe? In many ways it reminds me of Indonesia in the the early 90th.
