Glacier el Morado and other touristy things

We made a trip to the Glacier el Morado near Santiago.
We drove through the Maipo valley to the base at 6000ft. Here we started our climb to 9000ft.

During our hike of about 3 hours the landscape changes from dry to very dry. The path
is at first easy and changes slowly to finding your way through loose stones

And suddenly you have reached the glacier!

The el Morado mountain itself is about 15.000ft high and the vertical glacier that falls down from it has melted significantly since start of summer. In the lagoon below chunks of ice float around and the water level is low. The glacier and its surroundings are a spectacular sight.

Alpacas in Chile

Knuffelen met een baby alpaca!
A lovely cuddle with this baby alpaca!

To make our trip to the Hurtado Valley complete, we also visited the Urania Alpacas farm
About 40 alpacas were roaming around,
the males outside in the field and the females with baby alpacas in the barn.

There are two types of alpacas: Suri and Huyacaya. The difference between the two of them is the type of wool they produce; the fur of the Huacaya is similar to the sheep and the fur of the Suri is long just like a mop ;) To get a beautiful fibre these animals are eating a lot of alfalfa.

Closer to Santiago, about one and a half hour drive by car to the northeast, is the biggest alpaca farm of South America: Quintessence Alpacas. At this place alpacas are bred in a wide range of colours, not only for the wool as for the export market as well.

Together with my SiL I went here last week, just because I love these animals and I knew that they sell the wool. They are shorn once a year and their fibers come in more natural colours than any other animal. After shaving they have a little patch left on their flanks to be able to retrace the correct colour and a small patch on their heads.
This gives them a funny look!

So cute!

They also export to Europe and this video is made in Holland

In the shop next to the stables you can find beautiful clothes and yarns. Next to the natural colours they dye the fibres in many different colours. Unfortunately I wasn't allowed to take pictures. This one above is takes from their website.

I bought 2 balls of baby alpaca wool with silk for an infinity scarf.
Nice soft and warm for when I go back to Holland next month

Did you know that baby alpaca wool not nessecarily has to come from babies?
It could also come from a 17 year old one!
'Baby' stands for the type of fibre which is very soft and fine.

Lonesome cowboys in the Andes

Yeehaa!

We also went horse riding through the plains! It was a wonderful experience to watch the beautiful surroundings while your horse is finding its own way on the narrow and steep trails.

Star gazing in the Andes

De maan, gezien door een telescoop - The moon up close through a telescope

with four different telescopes placed in their own dome

's nachts duidelijk zichtbaar

We were lucky the moon was still in its new fase and the Milky Way Galaxy
was clearly visiblright above us in the night sky

Trip to Valle Hurtado

First of all I would like to wish you an inspirational and creative 2015!

During the last two weeks of 2014 P and I enjoyed having the kids with us
we went to Valle de Hurtado en de Valle de Elqui
about 500 km north of Santiago

We took route 5 through endless dry country sides

Langs de kust
Along the coast

Langs uitgestrekte velden met windmolens
Along endless fields with windmills

Finally we arrive at the Hurtado valley and the road becomes more narrow
the effect of a dry climate becomes more visible

De weg wordt steeds bochtiger
The road starts to curve more

The last 40 km is unpaved and takes us another 90 min
so after 7 hours we arrive at last!

Een ware oase
A true oasis

the next day we continue our way deeper into the valley

A beautiful colour palette, inspiration for a new quilt!
