In the mailbox this week

This week is flying by! I had some dates with new found friends and worked on a custom order for picture frames in between Portuguese lessons and other time consuming things we all need to do.

And suddenly someone made my day very special! All the way from Germany this parcel came with Liesel's book and a lovely fabric. Hilde, what a great gift, I love it! Thanks a lot!

Also some more Siggies found their way to São Paulo, so I better start making new ones for those who want to exchange with me. They are on its way!

And these are the picture frames I made for a custom order.

Cheers from Brazil, Hilde

Boa Páscoa!

Wishing you all a Happy Easter from Brazil! I am enjoying some lovely lazy days, just doing a little bit of stitching besides moving around some last bits of the move, walking the dogs, baking an Easter bread and sipping wines in the afternoon.... In Brazil we can enjoy 4 days of Easter, starting on Thursday and Sunday being the last one.

Zalig!
Quilting this Gecko quilt is more of a challenge than I thought it would be. I just want to have the right density of doodling. Maybe I started to dense in the center, and going to the outside I don't want it to be so intensely stitched. Do I want to do circles all the way? It is a constant looking for and listening to my inner drive, gut feeling. It is like finding a new me and I love it!

Doodling with the BSR

A few posts back I mentioned that I had some problems with the BSR of my Bernina. Oops, I should not have mentioned this because it was all my own misunderstanding of this wonderful stitch... Mr. Toledo of the Bernina shop here in town, came by and checked the machine: she is in excellent form, he told me! He showed me how to change from BSR1 to BSR2 and told me to change the bobbin tension... was I stupid!

Maybe a bit difficult to see because I used white on white, but this a first doodling attempt with the BSR2. I also found many examples for free-motion quilting designs at Leah's flickr album. These pictures and with the quilts seen at last week's show in São Paulo, I knew what I wanted to do!

And this is how the Gecko's are being 'doodled'....

To be continued! Wordt vervolgd!

Some thoughts and tips

When Hilde asked me if I wanted to join her in organizing a pincushion swap I was flattered because I admire her work and enjoy her book about pentagons. Little by little people started signing up and it became more and more a fun project to do.

As Hilde lives in Germany and I live in Brazil, most people signed up are from these two countries. For me a fun way to practice my Portuguese. And best of all, soon I will meet some of them who live in São Paulo as well!
If some of you still have not heard from their swap partner, please let us know and we will try to help to solve the (language) problems. It is just great to know that quilting and other kinds of crafts brings people together and that Swaps are all about sharing fun and loving thoughts as Hilde puts it! Check out her blog as her "Liesel’s Hexagon Technique" is reprinted!

I have been working on some House blocks again with Japanese fabrics. It is all a fiddly work and I am longing to go and sit behind the sewing machine and quilt my Gecko quilt...

Last but not least I should tell you about this lovely free give away at her block! I know her from my time in Singapore and she makes nice quilts and boxes. The fabrics she is giving away are cheering up my day! Maybe I should not have told you... ;-)

Patchwork show in São Paulo

With jet-lagged eyes I went yesterday to the last day of the Brazil Patchwork Show here in São Paulo. It was very busy with ladies shopping at the many different boots set up by different shops from in and around the city. The few man around were carrying their bags. For me an excellent opportunity to see which stores there are and where they are located.

Unfortunately all imported goods are expensive in Brazil, so imported fabrics are more expensive than the local ones. The local fabrics aren't so colourful and most projects are a bit bland. At the stand from Kikikits I got to talk to the owner and she is originally from Holland! We talked Dutch together which for me was such a relief! After I told her I was missing a quilt show, she took my outside the hall and around the corner of the building into a small venue. And there it was where I have been longing for!

Dus kon ik lekker even kletsen.

These ladies are real fiber artists and I hope to get in contact with them soonest! As soon as I know more details about these quilts, I will edit the info in this post.

Back home!

I am back on my base and these are the treasures my family and friends gave me. Also other stuff I bought in Holland! Fabrics to touch, magazines and books to dream away with, beads to cheer, and a small box with happiness just in case home sickness tries to come around again. These things will keep me busy and inspired for the next coming months!

Ciao from Brasil! Hilde
